Durham

Colorful, creative and entrepreneurial describe the spirit of Durham. It is a city as diverse in its population as it is in what it offers. It has evolved from one of the world's leading tobacco towns to a serious entertainment mecca and a hot bed for high tech research and science at Research Triangle Park, the largest of its kind in North America. The Bull City is proud to be home to the legendary Durham Bulls AAA baseball team that plays ball in the state-of-the-art Durham Bulls Atheltic Park. It sits across the street from the American Tobacco Campus, a National Historic Landmark and former headquarters of what was once the largest cigarette maufacturer in the world. The preservation project now provides a unqiue setting for offices, restaurants, and Art Institute, residences and outdoor concerts.

Another must-see destination downtown is historic Brightleaf Square, one more example of former tobacco warehouses converted into a popular shopping and dining hub with buisnesses facing each other across a charming brick courtyard lined with lamp posts. Also contributing to Durham's reputation of being where great things happen is the Durham Performing Arts Center, among the top 5 U.S. theaters in attendance. Here you can enjoy the biggest broadway shows on tour and superstar concerts. Downtown you can also see headline performers at the historic Carolina Theatre, located in a renovated Beaux Arts-style builiding with two adjacent cinemas. Durham is home, too, to some of the most popular festivals in the area, including the largest modern dance festival in the world -- the American Dance Festival Others include the Festival for the Eno, the Full Frame Documentary Film Festival, and the Bull Durham Blues Festival. And you can't talk about Durham without mentioning food. Its thriving community of imaginative chefs and independently-owned restuarants have long been a major attraction that has continued to garner national attention.

Did we mention Durham is home to world-renowned Duke University? Duke is consistently included among the best universities in the world by numerous university rankings,[14][15][16] and among the most innovative, according to a Reuters survey.[17] According to a Forbes study, Duke is ranked 11th among universities that have produced billionaires.[18][19] In a New York Times corporate study, Duke's graduates were shown to be among the most sought-after and valued in the world,[20] and Forbes magazine ranked Duke seventh in the world on its list of 'power factories' in 2012
